ISLE OF WHITHORN W.R.I.

MINUTES of a Meeting
held on Monday 1st March, 2010
@ 7.30 p.m. in St. Ninian's Hall.

WELCOME: The President, Dorothy McIlwraith, welcomed everyone present and the speaker for the evening Mrs. Jennifer Brodie who had brought along her friend Mrs. Sheila Topping from Port William W.R.I. Special condolences were given to Margaret Rankin at this time following the sad loss of Alastair. A card sent from the Rural had been much appreciated.

APOLOGIES: These were received from Margaret Rankin, Winifred Ramsden, Katie Forsyth, and Bunty McGhie.

MINUTES OF THE LAST MEETING HELD ON 1ST FEBRUARY 2010:
These were read out by the Secretary, Elma Carle, approved, and signed by Dorothy McIlwraith.

BUSINESS:
The rules for the competition "A Stem from Your Garden" were clarified; in that it it is one stem and only one entry would gain points.

There are still tickets available for the Lunch & Cookery Demonstration in Auchenmalg Hall on Saturday 13th March, 2010.

The final draft of the new Rural Constitution has been received and it was offered to members for perusal.

The President had sought estimate costs for the 1979 "Ribbon" Belleek Vase discussed at the February Meeting. It was estimated by Belleek that this would be worth £48 at the time of original sale. After a lengthy discussion it was decided to offer this to the Federation for use as a prize in the future.

SPEAKER:
Mrs. Jennifer Brodie proceeded to give a fascinating demonstration on crafts made from recycled items. On display were stools made from empty cardboard boxes with cardboard separators, stuffed with paper, covered and weight bearing. Her knitted handbags and slippers provided an excellent display. Next "sweater surgery" was explained - making cushions from shrunk jumpers. Another recycling project - sock monkeys - a striking toy made from socks. Members were all given a pair of baby socks to create very effective cup cakes.

The history of aprons was told by Jennifer along with their uses. She illustrated just how the simple apron could serve many purposes in the past - from drying children's tears; carrying in the eggs; carrying chicks; wrapping round arms for warmth; transporting kindling; carrying vegetables; also items being returned for compost; bringing in apples from the tree; and even dusting.

Mrs Sheila Topping then ran a Quiz which created much thought and laughter with not the highest marks being gained by members but much enjoyment created.

Margaret Cronie thanked the Port William ladies for providing such an entertaining evening which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone and several members going away to try their hand at new crafts.
